According to geologists, the great salt range of Himalayas is about 800 million years old. It was crafted when tectonic plate movements produced a mountain range which enveloped a shallow inland sea. Therefore, a thick, mineral-rich salt deposit was formed with dehydration of the sea. Animal and human species keep on developing all around this significant reservoir but the salt range was not explored for millions of years.

History Of Himalayan Rock Salt In Pakistan

Khewra Salt Mine

It is situated at the north of Pind Dadan Khan (Punjab district in Pakistan) or 160km south of Islamabad. Precisely located at the foothills of salt range, khewra mines are Asia’s oldest and Pakistan’s largest salt mines. In 320BC, it was discovered by the troops of Alexander3 of Macedon. The mining sector of salt range marks its origin about 800 million years ago. However, since 1872; khewra mines are actively participating in the financial development of Pakistan. Mined salt comes in white, pink, and red color which is about 98% pure.

Warcha Salt Mines

Warcha salt mine is located at 276km south of Islamabad in Khushab district. Access to this mine is improved through the railway line and road through Quaidabad. British period that is the Pre-Cambrian era marks the history of Warcha salt mine. However, mining proce- dures are quite active at Warcha since 1872. Generally, white and pink color of salt is being extracted which is discovered as 98% pure.

Bahadur Khel/Karak Salt Mines

Bahadur Khel salt mine is located at 265km from Islamabad and also dates back to the tertiary era. At the time of British rule, the mine was controlled by a government entity of British India. Purity percentage of the explored salt is 98% whereas salt color ranges from light grey to dark grey.

Jatta Salt Mines

These mines are located at 217km from Islamabad and are youngest among all Himalayan salt mines. Thus dating back to the tertiary era which is 26-66 million years ago. Mined salt is 98% pure and comes in white and grey tones.

Kalabagh Salt Mines

Being situated at the bank of the Indus River, Kalabagh salt mines are 296km from Islam- abad. These mines were also introduced in the Pre-Cambrian era. 13 different kinds of salt levels are available in various shades. Which are extracted by miners through room and pillar method.

It is also located 160km south of Islamabad, at the foothills of Himalaya salt range
